Preventing flu without medication

Simple healthy habits – such as regular hand-washing and covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing – can greatly reduce your risk of catching flu or spreading it to other people.

  • Wash those hands!
    The flu virus is spread via droplets caused by coughing and sneezing. In addition to inhaling these droplets, you can also become infected with the flu virus by touching contaminated surfaces – like a telephone or door handle – and then touching your mouth or nose, or by rubbing your eyes. The flu virus can live outside the body for hours – even days – but washing your hands regularly will minimise the risk of infection.
  • Use a tissue!
    When you sneeze or cough, remember to cover your nose and mouth with a tissue, not your hands. That way, you won’t be spreading the flu virus on to other people or on to your hands. A tissue will help prevent the spread of infection – but remember to throw it away immediately.
